Spotted
The Red-billed Tropicbird is a beautiful seabird of tropical waters, known for its pristine white plumage, black markings, and a prominent bright red bill. It also possesses two long central tail streamers. This powerful flyer is often seen far from land, typically over warmer ocean currents.
Where to spot
Found in tropical and subtropical regions of the Atlantic, eastern Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Breeds on remote oceanic islands, often nesting in cliffs or rocky crevices.
How to spot
Identify by its bright red bill, black eye-stripe, and long white tail streamers (which are shorter than the White-tailed). Note the black markings on its upperwings. Observe its powerful, direct flight over open ocean, often with deep wing beats. Listen for its harsh, rasping calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident in its tropical range. Breeding schedules vary regionally. Best observed during daylight hours, especially near breeding islands or on pelagic trips in suitable waters.
