Spotted
The Plumbeous-capped Tyrannulet is a small, Neotropical flycatcher distinguished by its bluish-grey crown. It inhabits humid montane forests and cloud forests.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane forests of western South America, particularly in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It prefers cloud forests and adjacent humid woodlands.
How to spot
Look for this small bird in the mid to upper canopy of montane forests. Identify it by its gray crown and otherwise olive-green plumage. Listen for its high-pitched, slightly buzzing calls, which are often the easiest way to detect it.
When to spot
A year-round resident. Best observed in the early mornings when it is most vocal and active in the canopy.
Its 'plumbeous' (lead-grey) cap is a subtle but key field mark, helping differentiate it from other similar-sized, olive-green tyrannulets in its complex habitat.
