Spotted
The Grey-breasted Flycatcher is a small, subtly marked flycatcher with olive-green upperparts and a distinct grey wash on its breast. It inhabits humid montane forests of western South America.
Where to spot
Distributed along the eastern slopes of the Andes, from northern Peru south through Bolivia. It prefers humid montane evergreen forests.
How to spot
Scan the mid to upper canopy of montane forests. Look for its small size and the grayish tone on its breast. It often makes quick sallies for insects. Listen for its high-pitched, often repetitive 'tseet' calls, which are vital for detection.
When to spot
A year-round resident in its highland habitats. Most active during the early morning hours, when it is foraging for insects.
Its grey breast, while not always boldly apparent, can be a useful field mark to distinguish it from other similar small flycatchers in its complex Andean habitat.
