The Plain Whistler is a subtly plumaged bird found in the forests of Timor and associated islands. As its name suggests, it lacks the bright colors of some relatives, but possesses a strong, clear voice.
Where to spot
Endemic to the islands of Timor and Wetar in Southeast Asia, inhabiting various forest types, including monsoon and evergreen forests.
How to spot
Look for its relatively plain olive-brown upperparts and duller, sometimes buffy, underparts, lacking any striking patterns. Listen for its powerful, whistled calls, which are typical of the whistler family.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active and vocal during the breeding season, but can be heard throughout the year.
Despite its unassuming appearance, the Plain Whistler exhibits the strong, clear vocalizations characteristic of its family, often providing the primary means of detection.
