Spotted
The Plain-backed Laughingthrush is a large, robust species characterized by its rather uniform brown-grey plumage on the back, contrasting with a often patterned head. These highly vocal and social birds move in noisy groups through dense forest undergrowth. It is native to parts of Southeast Asia.
Where to spot
Found in mainland Southeast Asia, including parts of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. It inhabits evergreen and mixed deciduous forests, dense bamboo thickets, and scrub, from lowlands to mid-elevations.
How to spot
Listen for their loud, varied, and often 'laughing' calls, which are a good clue to their presence. Look for groups moving actively through the undergrowth and lower canopy. Pay attention to head markings and the relatively plain back.
When to spot
Resident throughout its range and observable year-round. Early morning and late afternoon are the most active periods for foraging and vocalizations.
