Where to spot
Found in mountainous regions of southern China (Yunnan, Guangxi) and northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. Inhabits dense montane evergreen and bamboo forests at moderate to high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, clear, and melodious whistling calls. Look for it moving through the mid-story and undergrowth. Its vibrant plumage, especially the golden-yellow underparts and dark facial mask, makes it highly identifiable.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the breeding season (spring/early summer). Often observed in small foraging parties.
