Spotted
The Philippine Coucal, also known as the Mindoro Coucal, is a critically endangered species of coucal endemic to the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. It is characterized by its glossy dark plumage with a prominent bare blue patch around the eye.
Where to spot
Endemic to Mindoro Island in the Philippines, restricted to remaining patches of lowland forest and dense secondary growth.
How to spot
Focus on its distinctive blue bare skin around the eye. Listen intensely for any deep, hooting calls. Finding this species requires dedicated effort, often with local guides familiar with its last remaining habitats.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, but extremely difficult to find due to its rarity and secretive nature. Any observation is significant, regardless of time of day or year.
This highly threatened species is distinguished by its unique bright blue facial skin, a striking feature among coucals. Its critical status is primarily due to extensive habitat loss on Mindoro.
