Spotted
The Peruvian Red-breasted Blackbird is a striking icterid found in western South America, with males featuring a glossy black body and a vibrant red breast. Females are duller, often streaky brown with a reddish tint.
Where to spot
Primarily found along the Pacific coast and western slopes of the Andes in Peru, extending into parts of Ecuador and Chile. Inhabits open fields, pastures, and agricultural land.
How to spot
Look for it in open, grassy areas, often perched on low vegetation or foraging on the ground. The male's brilliant red breast is unmistakable, even from a distance.
When to spot
Year-round resident. More easily observed during the breeding season (spring/summer in the Southern Hemisphere) when males are most vocal and visible.
This species is often found in agricultural areas, adapting well to human-modified landscapes where it can forage for insects and seeds.
