The Olive-sided Flycatcher is a large, stout-bodied North American flycatcher known for its distinctive 'quick, three beers!' call. It is a long-distance migrant, breeding in northern forests and wintering in the tropics.
Where to spot
Breeds in coniferous and mixed forests across Canada and the western and northern United States. Winters in South America, from southern Mexico to Bolivia.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic call from the tallest trees in its habitat. Look for its prominent dark 'vest' on a pale belly and its upright posture on exposed snags or branches.
When to spot
Breeding: late spring to early summer in North America. Migration: spring (April-May) and fall (August-October). Wintering: fall through spring in the Neotropics.
