Spotted
The Mountain Owlet-nightjar is a small, nocturnal bird inhabiting the highland forests of New Guinea, distinguished by its soft, mottled plumage and large eyes adapted for low-light conditions.
Where to spot
Montane rainforests, cloud forests, and subalpine forests across the central mountain ranges of New Guinea.
How to spot
Nighttime observation is best, using a spotlight to detect eye-shine or by listening for its calls. During the day, it is incredibly well-camouflaged and difficult to spot in its dense, elevated habitat.
When to spot
Active exclusively at night for hunting insects. It spends the day roosting in tree hollows or dense undergrowth.
This species is primarily found at higher elevations than many other owlet-nightjars, hence its common name, often inhabiting mossy cloud forests.
