Spotted
The Moluccan Woodcock is a rare and elusive forest bird endemic to the northern Moluccas islands of Indonesia. It is a highly localized species of montane forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the montane forests of the northern Moluccas islands (e.g., Halmahera, Ternate, Bacan) in Indonesia.
How to spot
Observation is extremely challenging due to its rarity and dense, remote montane forest habitat. Requires specialized expeditions. Look for its cryptic plumage blending into the forest floor, and listen for its calls at night.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its resident montane forest habitat. Likely most active at night or during crepuscular hours.
This woodcock is known for its remarkable camouflage, which allows it to blend seamlessly into the leaf litter and undergrowth of its forest habitat, making it incredibly difficult to spot.
