Spotted
Anna's Blue Flycatcher (*Melaenornis annamarulae*) is a recently described and rare African flycatcher. It has a glossy dark blue-black plumage, with subtle differences distinguishing it from similar species.
Where to spot
Known from only a few isolated montane forests in West Africa, specifically Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire. It prefers dense undergrowth in primary and old secondary forests.
How to spot
Patience and quiet observation are crucial. Look for its dark blue-black plumage in dense forest. Listening for its unique, high-pitched calls is often the best way to confirm its presence.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Due to its elusive nature and restricted range, observation is extremely challenging. It is typically most active in the early morning and late afternoon.
This species was only formally described in 2017, highlighting that new bird species continue to be discovered, even in well-studied regions.
