Spotted
The Mangaia Kingfisher is a beautiful, distinctively plumaged kingfisher endemic to a single island in the Cook Islands. It is characterized by its bright blue upperparts and rufous-orange underparts.
Where to spot
Exclusively found on Mangaia Island in the southern Cook Islands. It inhabits dense native forest, particularly the makatea (fossilized coral) forests, and sometimes ventures into disturbed areas.
How to spot
Look for it perched in the dense canopy or undergrowth, often motionless. Its striking colors can be hard to spot in dappled light. Listen for its distinctive territorial calls, which are crucial for finding it in its dense habitat.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, with peak activity in the cooler hours. It is a resident species, present year-round.
This species is notable for being one of the few kingfishers that thrives in a largely terrestrial, non-aquatic environment, hunting insects and small vertebrates in dense forest foliage.
