The Madagascar Sunbird is a large and striking species, with males boasting brilliant iridescent green and blue plumage, and a long, decurved bill. It is common across Madagascar.
Where to spot
Endemic to Madagascar and the Comoro Islands, inhabiting forests, woodlands, coastal scrub, and gardens.
How to spot
Its larger size and distinctive long bill make it identifiable. Look for its brilliant iridescent plumage as it feeds. Its loud, clear song is also a good indicator of its presence.
When to spot
Active throughout the year. Most visible during morning and late afternoon foraging. Easily observed at flowering trees and shrubs.
Despite its 'sunbird' moniker, this species is known to have a more omnivorous diet than many other sunbirds, also feeding on a significant amount of insects and small fruits.
