Spotted
The Madagascar Red Owl is a striking and highly cryptic species of barn owl endemic to Madagascar. It is a rare and secretive resident of the island's rainforests and dry deciduous forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to Madagascar, primarily found in eastern rainforests and western dry deciduous forests, often near water bodies.
How to spot
Extremely difficult to observe due to its rarity and nocturnal, secretive nature. Listen for its distinctive series of descending hoots, often described as 'whi-whi-whi-whi'. Spotlighting in appropriate forest habitat at night is the only way to attempt a sighting.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, active from dusk to dawn.
This owl was long thought to be extinct, or at least extremely rare, with only a few sightings until its rediscovery in the 1990s, offering hope for its conservation.
