Endemic to Madagascar, primarily found in eastern rainforests and western dry deciduous forests, often near water bodies.
How to spot
Extremely difficult to observe due to its rarity and nocturnal, secretive nature. Listen for its distinctive series of descending hoots, often described as 'whi-whi-whi-whi'. Spotlighting in appropriate forest habitat at night is the only way to attempt a sighting.

Strictly nocturnal, active from dusk to dawn.
