The Vilcabamba Canastero is a restricted-range ovenbird, subtly marked with rufous wing patches and a pale supercilium. It is endemic to the humid montane forests of the Vilcabamba mountains in Peru.
Where to spot
Humid montane forests and cloud forests in the Vilcabamba mountain range of Peru. Found at middle to high elevations, often in dense undergrowth.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, somewhat accelerating calls. Look for it foraging secretively in dense undergrowth or along forest edges. Patience is key when seeking this elusive bird.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during early mornings. Due to its restricted range and habitat, observation is challenging and usually requires a dedicated expedition.
