Spotted
The Comb Duck is a large, distinctive waterfowl species found across sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, and South Asia. Males are particularly notable for a prominent, fleshy knob on their bill during the breeding season.
Where to spot
Widespread in tropical and subtropical wetlands, marshes, rivers, and flooded grasslands across sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, and South and Southeast Asia.
How to spot
Look for a large duck with glossy black upperparts that show iridescent green and blue hues, contrasting with white underparts. Males have the prominent black comb on the bill, while females are smaller and lack the comb. Often seen in pairs or small groups, grazing or dabbling in shallow water.
When to spot
A year-round resident throughout most of its range, with local movements depending on water conditions. Breeding seasons are typically tied to the onset of local rainy seasons.

The male Comb Duck's fleshy comb, from which it gets its name, becomes noticeably larger and more prominent during the breeding season, likely playing a role in display and mate attraction.
