Spotted
Jackson's Crimsonwing is a stunning and shy finch found in the montane forests of the Albertine Rift. It sports a bright crimson back and wings, with a contrasting dark grey head and underparts.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Albertine Rift mountains (Uganda, Rwanda, DR Congo), inhabiting dense montane rainforests and bamboo thickets at high altitudes.
How to spot
Seek it in dense forest undergrowth, often near bamboo. Listen carefully for its soft calls. Patience is essential due to its secretive nature.
When to spot
Year-round in its specific range. Best chances are during early morning or late afternoon when birds are most active.
Like other crimsonwings, it has a robust bill adapted for crushing the hard seeds of various forest plants and bamboos.
