The Olivaceous Varied Tit is a subspecies or closely related form of the Varied Tit, found in Japan, characterized by its reddish-brown and black-and-white plumage with an olivaceous wash. It is an agile forest inhabitant.
Where to spot
Found in Japan and some offshore islands, inhabiting mixed deciduous and coniferous forests, often in mountainous areas.
How to spot
Scan the canopy and mid-story of forests. Its distinct plumage pattern is key. Listen for its clear, ringing calls, often sounding like 'tsusu-pii'.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the day, especially mornings.
Varied Tits are known for their ability to cache food, storing seeds and insects in bark crevices for later consumption, particularly during colder months.
