Spotted
The Groove-billed Toucanet is named for the distinctive grooves on its bill, a key identification feature. Its plumage is predominantly green with a contrasting colorful bill. This active toucanet is found in tropical forests, where it moves through the canopy in small groups.
Where to spot
Inhabits humid tropical and subtropical forests, forest edges, and second growth, primarily in northern Venezuela and northeastern Colombia.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic, often rapid, 'grra-rrra-rrra' calls. Look for its green plumage and unique grooved bill as it forages in the mid to upper canopy. It often moves in small, noisy flocks.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most vocal and visible during the early morning and late afternoon hours. Breeding season often leads to increased activity.

The prominent grooves on its bill are believed to enhance its grip on fruits, its primary food source, making it more efficient at feeding.
