Spotted
The Grey Bush Chat is a relatively large and distinctively colored species, with males showing a combination of grey, black, and rufous. It is a bird of open, often rocky, mountainous terrain.
Where to spot
Found across the Himalayas, parts of China, and Southeast Asia, inhabiting open montane forests, rocky slopes, and scrubland, often at high elevations.
How to spot
Look for it perching on prominent rocks, low trees, or bushes in open, hilly country. The male's grey, black, and rufous pattern is distinctive. Listen for its short, slightly buzzy song.
When to spot
Year-round resident in some areas, with altitudinal migration in others. Most visible during the breeding season (spring/summer) when males are more vocal.
Unlike many Saxicola species that prefer low scrub, the Grey Bush Chat is often found at higher altitudes on rocky slopes and sparse woodlands.
