The Grey-breasted Laughingthrush is a distinctive babbler endemic to the high-altitude forests of the Western Ghats in southern India. It is recognized by its grey breast and contrasting rufous flanks and undertail.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Western Ghats of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, southern India. Inhabits dense montane evergreen forests and shola-grassland mosaic, particularly in the undergrowth at high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, clear, and varied calls, often delivered in a duet. Look for movement in the dense undergrowth. Its grey breast contrasting with rufous flanks is a reliable identification mark.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Often observed in small to medium-sized groups.
This species often forages on the ground, actively tossing aside leaf litter with its bill to expose insects, making distinct rustling sounds.
