Spotted
The Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan is a large, striking toucan with a distinctive grey breast and colorful bill. It inhabits high-altitude cloud forests and elfin woodlands in the Andes, often found in cooler, misty environments. Its calls are a deep and resonating part of the mountain soundscape.
Where to spot
Native to humid montane and cloud forests, typically at high elevations in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Peru.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic, deep, hooting calls. Look for its grey breast and colorful bill as it perches conspicuously on exposed branches or moves through the canopy. It often travels in small, noisy groups.
When to spot
Present year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Calls are more frequent during the breeding season.

Like other mountain-toucans, it has a shorter, more robust bill compared to lowland toucans, adapted for its diet in high-altitude forests which may include more insects and small vertebrates.
