Spotted
This hybrid combines traits of the distinctive Eurasian Wigeon with the common Mallard, resulting in a variable appearance that can be a fascinating challenge for identification. Individuals may show characteristics from either parent in varying degrees.
Where to spot
Wetlands, lakes, and agricultural fields in Eurasia, occasionally seen in North America where Eurasian Wigeons occur as vagrants.
How to spot
Look for a round head shape and potentially some rufous or grey tones from the wigeon, combined with Mallard-like body and bill features. Listen for calls that might be intermediate between the pure species.
When to spot
Most likely during migration or wintering periods when Eurasian Wigeons are present in mixed flocks.
Eurasian Wigeons are primarily grazers, feeding on vegetation on land, a feeding behavior that hybrids might also exhibit to some extent, distinct from the Mallard's typical dabbling.
