Where to spot
Found in southern South America, primarily Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil, migrating north to central and northern South America and sometimes southern Central America for winter. Inhabits open woodlands, savannas, and forest edges.

Look for its overall slaty-grey plumage, darker wings, and a prominent dark eye-stripe with a pale malar stripe. The hidden orange-red crown patch is a key feature when visible. Listen for its loud, harsh calls.
