The Crimson-breasted Woodpecker is a strikingly colored species of the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, named for the deep crimson wash on its breast. It has a black back with white spots and a red crown in males.
Where to spot
Inhabits montane and temperate forests in the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, from Nepal to China, Myanmar, Thailand, and Malaysia.
How to spot
Scan the mid to upper canopy of forest trees. Look for the distinctive crimson wash on its breast. Listen for its loud, sharp calls and strong drumming, which help in locating it in the dense forest.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its mountainous and forested habitat. Active during daylight hours, often more vocal and visible in the mornings.
