Where to spot
Endemic to the dry Chaco region of northern Argentina and Paraguay, inhabiting arid scrubland, savannas, and open woodlands.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground in open, dry habitats. Pay attention to its head for the subtle crest. Listen for its calls, which can help locate it in the dry landscape.
When to spot
Active year-round. Nest building is a key activity during the breeding season.
The Crested Hornero's crest is often subtly visible, but can be raised when the bird is alarmed or excited, adding to its charismatic appearance.
