The Crested Hornero is a distinctive Furnariid named for the small, erectile crest on its head. Like other horneros, it's a terrestrial feeder and renowned for its mud nests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the dry Chaco region of northern Argentina and Paraguay, inhabiting arid scrubland, savannas, and open woodlands.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground in open, dry habitats. Pay attention to its head for the subtle crest. Listen for its calls, which can help locate it in the dry landscape.
When to spot
Active year-round. Nest building is a key activity during the breeding season.
