Spotted
The Tucumán Spinetail is a relatively recently described Furnariid with a brownish plumage and subtle markings. It inhabits high-altitude montane forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to humid montane forests of the southern Andes, specifically in northwestern Argentina (Tucumán province) and potentially adjacent Bolivia.
How to spot
Focus on the mid-story and canopy of humid cloud forests at higher elevations. Listen for its unique vocalizations, which are important for distinguishing it from similar species.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, particularly in the morning. It is a resident species, observable year-round in its restricted range.
It was formerly considered a subspecies of the Rusty-backed Spinetail but was recognized as a distinct species due to genetic and vocal differences.
