Spotted
The Canyon Canastero is a small, inconspicuous ovenbird found in the high-altitude, arid scrublands of the Andes. Its dull, cryptic plumage provides excellent camouflage against the rocky terrain.
Where to spot
Endemic to the inter-Andean valleys and slopes of central Peru, typically found in arid and semi-arid montane scrub, rocky areas, and agricultural land borders at elevations between 2,800 and 4,000 meters.
How to spot
Look for this terrestrial bird foraging on the ground or darting between low bushes and cacti. Listen for its distinctive song, as it is often heard before it is seen.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, particularly during the cooler early mornings and late afternoons. Breeding season observations might be more common when birds are vocalizing.
