Spotted
A medium-sized apalis with grey upperparts, a pale belly, and a brownish-tinged tail, contrasting with a grey head.
Where to spot
Montane forests and high-altitude woodlands in East Africa (Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia).
How to spot
Look for the brownish tinge on its tail (which might be subtle) and its active foraging in the mid-strata of trees. Listen for its high-pitched, rapid, and often buzzing or trilling song.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active throughout the day. Breeding is likely during the wet season.
The 'brown-tailed' feature, while subtle, can be a useful diagnostic clue, especially when seen in flight or if the tail is fanned.
