Spotted
The Brown-backed Gerygone is a small, unobtrusive insectivore endemic to eastern Australia. Its subtle plumage allows it to blend seamlessly into its preferred dense forest habitats.
Where to spot
Primarily found in rainforests, wet sclerophyll forests, and adjacent dense woodlands along the east coast of Australia.
How to spot
Look for its small size and constant movement within the foliage. Listen for its high-pitched, warbling song, which is often the best way to detect its presence.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often more vocal during the breeding season which varies regionally but is generally spring to summer.
This species is known for its intricate, cup-shaped nest, often decorated with lichen and moss, making it well camouflaged in the forest understory.
