Spotted
The Brown-chested Barbet is a more subdued member of the barbet family, characterized by its brownish chest and greener body plumage. It is found in the humid tropical forests of South America, where it mainly feeds on fruits and insects. Its calls are distinctive but can be hard to pinpoint.
Where to spot
Inhabits humid tropical and subtropical lowland forests, primarily in the Amazon Basin of Brazil and Peru.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic monotonous hooting call, which can be difficult to locate precisely. Scan the mid to upper canopy, focusing on areas with fruiting trees. Its brownish chest is a key identifying feature.
When to spot
Resident throughout the year. Best observed during early morning or late afternoon when foraging activity is highest. Increased vocalization might occur during the breeding season.
This barbet's coloration offers excellent camouflage among the tree bark and shadows of its dense forest habitat, making it blend in surprisingly well despite its relatively large size.
