The Broad-billed Spadebill is a small flycatcher, true to its name with an exceptionally wide bill, inhabiting humid lowland forests. It's often found near forest gaps or clearings.
Where to spot
Humid lowland forests and forest edges across the Amazon basin and parts of the Guianan Shield in South America. Look in the understory.
How to spot
Its extremely broad bill is the primary identification feature. Look for it perching quietly and making short, direct sallies to catch insects from foliage.
When to spot
Year-round, most active in the early morning and late afternoon.
This species, like others in its genus, has specialized eyes that are set forward on its head, providing excellent binocular vision for precision insect capture.
