Spotted
The Cinereous Finch is a small, subtly colored finch found in the high-altitude grasslands and shrublands of the Andes. Its plumage is primarily grayish, allowing it to blend well with its environment.
Where to spot
High Andes of Bolivia and Argentina, typically found in puna grasslands and high-altitude scrub, generally between 2,800 and 4,000 meters.
How to spot
Scan open, grassy slopes and areas with low scrub. It often feeds on the ground. Listen for its characteristic song to pinpoint its location, as it can be inconspicuous when silent.
When to spot
Year-round resident, though observing can be challenging in winter months due to harsh high-altitude conditions. Best seen on sunny mornings.
Despite its plain appearance, this finch possesses a distinctive song, which is often the best way to locate it within its preferred, often windswept, high-Andean habitats.
