The Black Saw-wing is a widespread, entirely black swallow found throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa. It is characterized by the unique saw-like serrations on its primary feathers.
Where to spot
Open woodlands, savannas, grasslands, forest edges, and cultivated areas across most of sub-Saharan Africa.
How to spot
Look for its entirely black plumage and the distinctive, slightly forked tail, as it flies in typical swallow fashion. The 'saw-wing' feature is almost impossible to see without very close views.
When to spot
Year-round, although some populations may undertake local movements. Active during the day.
