Spotted
The Black-girdled Bushbird is an extremely rare and critically endangered antbird, known for its distinctive plumage, including a broad black band across its breast. It is endemic to a small region of Peru.
Where to spot
Dense undergrowth of humid foothill forests, particularly bamboo thickets and vine tangles, exclusively in a very restricted area of northern Peru.
How to spot
Requires significant effort and a highly experienced local guide familiar with its specific vocalizations and habitat. Listen for any unique calls. Be prepared for long waits and minimal disturbance.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Observation is extremely challenging due to its rarity and specific habitat. Best chances might be during early morning, but any sighting is highly fortuitous.
This species was only discovered in 2004, making it one of the most recent avian discoveries in the Neotropics, and it is considered one of the rarest birds in the world.
