Spotted
Berlepsch's Canastero is a rare and localized ovenbird with a rather plain, grayish-brown plumage and a subtle pale supercilium. It is endemic to a small region of the Bolivian Andes.
Where to spot
High-altitude montane scrub and Polylepis woodlands in a very restricted area of the Bolivian Andes. Found at high elevations, often near the treeline.
How to spot
Its calls are crucial for detection due to its elusive nature. Look for subtle movements among dense, low-growing vegetation. Patience and a good ear are essential.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Its rarity makes observation challenging, but early mornings are generally best for bird activity.
This species is named after Hans von Berlepsch, a German ornithologist, and is an example of a range-restricted species vulnerable to habitat changes.
