Spotted
The Ruwenzori Babbler is a distinctive species endemic to the high-altitude forests of the Albertine Rift mountains in East Africa. It is characterized by its plain olive-brown plumage and shy, skulking habits.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Albertine Rift mountains, including the Ruwenzori Mountains, in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Inhabits dense montane evergreen forests and bamboo thickets at high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its quiet, often repeated, whistled or chattering calls emanating from deep within the vegetation. Look for subtle movements in the dense undergrowth. Its plain plumage makes clear views important for identification.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Observation requires patience due to its elusive nature.
This species is a typical 'skulker' of dense montane thickets, making it a challenging but rewarding bird for dedicated birdwatchers in its limited range.
