The Rufous-backed Babbler is a social and somewhat nomadic bird found in the arid and semi-arid regions of inland Australia. It is characterized by its rich rufous (reddish-brown) back.
Where to spot
Inhabits mulga, mallee, and acacia woodlands in inland arid and semi-arid Australia.
How to spot
Look for groups moving noisily on the ground or in low bushes. Identify by their prominent rufous back, white eyebrow, and a range of chattering and bubbling calls.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often seen in small groups. They are more vocal during the breeding season.
These babblers are known to build multiple 'roosting nests' for communal sleeping, in addition to their breeding nests, showcasing their strong social bonds.
