Spotted
The Basra Reed Warbler is a migratory species with a very restricted breeding range in the Middle East, wintering in East Africa. It is larger and more robust than many other reed warblers.
Where to spot
Breeds almost exclusively in the marshlands of southern Iraq and southwestern Iran. Winters in reedbeds and dense vegetation in eastern Africa, particularly Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia.
How to spot
In its breeding grounds, focus on dense, tall reedbeds. Listen for its loud, deep, and scratchy song. In wintering areas, it can be more difficult to spot due to its skulking nature in dense cover.
When to spot
Breeding season (spring/early summer) in Mesopotamia is best for observation. Migration periods (spring/autumn) and winter in East Africa also offer opportunities.

This species faces significant conservation challenges due to the destruction and degradation of its unique Mesopotamian marshland breeding habitats.
