The Balicassiao is a large, distinctive drongo, known for its glossy black plumage and a robust, slightly hooked bill. Unlike many drongos, its tail is less deeply forked, giving it a more robust silhouette. It is an active and vocal bird, often seen in a variety of forest habitats.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Philippines, found on most of the larger islands. It inhabits forests, forest edges, and secondary growth, from lowlands up to lower montane elevations.
How to spot
Look for its glossy black plumage and its robust, slightly hooked bill. Its tail is forked, but less deeply than other drongos. It is often quite vocal, with a wide range of calls, including harsh notes and whistles.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, observable year-round as it is a resident species. Often seen foraging during the morning and late afternoon.
