Spotted
The Ashy Laughingthrush is a medium-sized species with a predominantly greyish plumage, often with a rufous wash on the wings. These social and vocal birds typically move in small groups through the mid-story and undergrowth of dense forests. It is native to parts of Southeast Asia.
Where to spot
Found in mainland Southeast Asia, including parts of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. It inhabits evergreen and mixed deciduous forests, often in dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets, from low to mid-elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its various chattering and whistling calls. Look for active groups moving through dense vegetation. Pay attention to the overall greyish tone and any subtle rufous or streaked patterns for identification.
When to spot
Resident throughout its range and observable year-round. It is most active and vocal during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning and late afternoon.
The Ashy Laughingthrush can be challenging to differentiate from other grey-plumaged laughingthrushes without clear views of its subtle markings and distinct vocalizations.
