Spotted
The Anteater Chat is a ground-dwelling species, known for its overall dark plumage and its association with open grasslands and savanna, where it often follows foraging animals.
Where to spot
Found in Southern Africa, specifically in open grasslands, savannas, and cultivated areas, often near livestock or recently disturbed ground.
How to spot
Look for it walking or hopping on the ground in open fields. It can be quite secretive but may perch on low mounds or fence posts. Its overall dark appearance requires good light for identification.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the cooler parts of the day, particularly mornings and late afternoons.
Like its northern counterpart, it sometimes associates with large mammals or ant columns to catch disturbed insects, giving rise to its intriguing common name.
