The Andean Avocet (Recurvirostra andina) is a distinctive wading bird endemic to the high Andes of South America. It is characterized by its elegant black and white plumage, blue-grey legs, and uniquely upcurved bill, found in high-altitude saline lakes.
Where to spot
Endemic to the high Andes, from southern Peru and western Bolivia to northern Chile and northwestern Argentina. Inhabits shallow, often saline or brackish, high-altitude lakes and lagoons.
How to spot
Look for its elegant black and white plumage and distinctively upcurved bill as it forages in the shallow, often glittering, waters of high-altitude lakes. They are typically seen in pairs or small flocks.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during the austral summer (November-March) when conditions are more favorable. Active during the day.
