Spotted
The Yellow-collared Bush Tanager is a small, greenish songbird with a distinctive yellow throat patch. It is found in humid montane forests of the Andes.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane forests of the Andes, from northern Colombia and Venezuela south to Peru. Inhabits dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Look for it foraging in the understory of montane forests, often in mixed-species flocks. The yellow throat patch is a key identification feature. Listen for its quiet calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the breeding season, which often coincides with the local wet season.
Despite its common name, recent genetic studies have placed the Bush Tanagers (Chlorospingus) in the Passerellidae family, making them New World sparrows rather than true tanagers.
