Spotted
This hybrid features a mix of characteristics from the American Wigeon and the ubiquitous Mallard. Its plumage can be quite variable, making identification an intriguing puzzle for birdwatchers.
Where to spot
Freshwater wetlands, ponds, and open water bodies across North America, where both parent species are common.
How to spot
Look for a short, grey bill with a black tip (from the Wigeon) combined with a larger, more Mallard-like body. Hints of the Wigeon's white crown or green eye patch might be present on a Mallard-like head, along with a variable speculum.
When to spot
Year-round in resident populations, or during migration periods.
American Wigeons are known for 'pirating' food from other dabbling ducks by snatching vegetation brought to the surface, and a hybrid might display similar opportunistic feeding behaviors.
