Spotted
The White-crowned Spinetail is a small Furnariid distinguished by a pale or whitish crown patch, contrasting with its otherwise brownish plumage. It inhabits montane forests.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane forests and cloud forests of the Andes, ranging from southern Colombia through Ecuador to northern Peru.
How to spot
Search for it in the understory and mid-story, often associated with mixed-species flocks. Pay close attention to the top of its head for the diagnostic pale crown.
When to spot
Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. It is a resident species, observable year-round.
The subtle crown patch can sometimes be difficult to see unless the bird is well-lit or actively displaying, requiring keen observation to confirm identification.
