The Western White-ruffed Manakin is a small Piprid, with males displaying an impressive white ruff of feathers around their neck and a black body. Females are duller.
Where to spot
Found in humid lowland and foothill forests of Central America and northwestern South America, from Costa Rica to Colombia and western Ecuador.
How to spot
Look for males at known lek sites in the forest understory. The prominent white ruff on the male is unmistakable, and listening for their mechanical sounds helps locate them.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, especially in the mornings when males are displaying. Observable year-round.
Males perform elaborate courtship displays at leks, involving rapid movements and the erection of their distinctive white neck ruff.
