Spotted
The Unicolored Blue Flycatcher is a beautiful bird where males are almost entirely a uniform dark blue, with subtle variations in shade. Females are duller, often brownish-grey.
Where to spot
Widespread across South and Southeast Asia, from the Himalayas to Indochina, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Inhabits dense broadleaf evergreen forests, often near streams.
How to spot
Look for the male's uniform deep blue plumage. It tends to perch in the mid-story of forests and makes quick sallies for insects. Listen for its short, clear, whistled song.
When to spot
A resident species, though some populations may undergo altitudinal migration. Observable year-round, most active at dawn and dusk. More vocal during breeding season.
Despite its 'unicolored' name, the male's plumage can appear strikingly different depending on the light, ranging from deep indigo to iridescent azure, creating a dynamic visual experience for observers.
