The Spot-winged Antbird (Hylophylax naevius) is a small, patterned antbird, named for the prominent white spots on its wing coverts and a rufous crown. It has a whitish belly with fine barring.
Where to spot
Inhabits the understory of humid lowland forests across the Amazon basin and parts of the Guianas.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often high-pitched vocalizations. Look for it hopping on the forest floor or low in dense vegetation. The prominent white wing spots are key to identification.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon.
This species is an opportunistic army-ant follower, benefiting from the insects flushed by ant swarms but also foraging independently.
